Bhutan’s tourism policy emphasizes its position as a unique and exclusive destination celebrated for its authenticity, remoteness, and well-preserved cultural and natural heritage. The government is committed to a strategy of ‘High Value, Low Volume’ tourism, focusing on creating an aura of exclusivity and maximizing returns for Bhutan.

The Vision Bhutan’s tourism industry is built on principles of sustainability, prioritizing environmental preservation, cultural respect, and economic viability. The government recognizes tourism as a vital tool for socio-economic development and cultural exchange. It aims to foster deeper global understanding and friendship through responsible travel practices.

To achieve these goals, Bhutan adopts a cautious approach to tourism development, leveraging its indigenous resources and unique advantages to position itself as a high-end destination aligned with the principles of Gross National Happiness.

Tourism Levy Tourists visiting Bhutan are required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which funds programs aimed at preserving culture, heritage, and the environment, as well as enhancing infrastructure and opportunities for future generations. The SDF is set at USD $100 per person per night for US Dollar-paying tourists, with a 50% discount for children aged 6 to 12. Additionally, there is a 24-hour SDF waiver for tourists staying in border towns.

Indian guests are levied an SDF of Nu. 1,200 per person per night, or the equivalent amount in INR, with this rate reviewed and revised every two years.

Visa Fee & Required Documentation Tourists must provide a valid passport, with at least six months validity from the intended departure date. Travel insurance for the duration of the trip and a recent passport-size photograph are also required. The visa fee is USD $40 per person, non-refundable, with processing taking up to five working days.
